Helvetica

A person’s handwriting can reveal certain personality traits... A font choice too. Though I'm not a font-o-logist, the typeface you choose will surely give me a hint of who you are, at least who you pretend to be. The first differential will be whether you choose a serif or a sans-serif policy. When you see a letter written in Times New Roman, do you think that person is old school? uptight? You may not want to rule out the possibility that they have no clue how to change the font...

One font that may be most ubiquitous of all is Helvetica, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Companies that use the typeface in its logos include Apple, American Apparel, and Panasonic. According to devotees and graphic designers quoted in the BBC News Magazine, Helvetica conveys a range of feelings, ranging from efficiency and reliability to blandness. There’s even a documentary on the typeface, titled Helvetica. Director Gary Hustwit speaks about his interest in the font:

"Why make a film about a typeface, let alone a feature documentary film about Helvetica? Because it's all around us. You've probably already seen Helvetica several times today. It might have told you which subway platform you needed, or tried to sell you investment services or vacation getaways in the ads in your morning paper. Maybe it gave you the latest headlines on television, or let you know whether to 'push' or 'pull' to open your office door."

Millions of people see and use Helvetica every day; why? How did a typeface drawn by a little-known Swiss designer in 1957 become one of the most popular ways for us to communicate our words fifty years later?

Cuz its just kool?

If you're curious about Helvetica, you can read Helvetica forever, Story of a typeface, a 130-page little book on the font's success story.

Arial is the closest font to Helvetica. But the first is like prêt-à-porter while the second is haute-couture. Could you make the difference?

Here is the key!

Quote of the day

And keep talking that mess that's fine
But, could you walk and talk at the same time?

Ok, today I've decided to keep my food diary with more dedication, i.e. until the end of the day. I went to the Marina for a long walk this morning with my boyfriend and we ended in the Fort Mason park were we sat and had a picnic. It was wonderful, just like spring. There were a lot of runners, people with music, the sun was shining. My boyfriend even took off his shirt to sunbathe. There was something in the atmosphere, I don't know what, I could see me there having a real good summer-time with friends. White tee-shirt, light jeans, sunglasses... It really gave me an incentive to lose weight. And that's what I'm going to do!

January 18th

Weight : I'm big, about 120 lbs. I really need to take steps to go drop pounds to 114... I guess being on holiday and depressed doesn't help.

Journal
Breakfast 200 calories sandwich, fresca
Snack 180 calories sandwich*

By "sandwich" I mean 2 slices of a light bread I find in some stores only, light cream cheese, cucumbers, tomato and sprouts. A regular sanwich would be more like 500 calories.
